First Aid on Another Level

Creative Salmon is dedicated to providing a healthy and safe workplace for all employees, contractors, and guests. But, ensuring safety can be especially challenging in remote locations.

Creative sea sites are only accessible by boat and are approximately 30 to 45 minutes from the nearest hospital. The relative isolation of the sea sites means it’s important that staff be trained in case of a medical emergency.

The Occupational First Aid Level 3 course, an 80-hour program, is designed for remote worksites or employers with a large workforce more than 20 minutes from medical aid. The course specializes in various injury-management scenarios, from upper limb fractures to spinal cord injuries and cardiac arrest, and empowers staff with the steps to act on, prevent, and manage life’s emergencies.

Rodrigo Leme, one of Creative’s Biology Technicians, recently completed Level 3 training.

“It was very challenging and intense, but it made me realize things I hadn’t before,” says Rodrigo. “I’m more aware of my surroundings and how to help people, and I’m prepared if anything unexpected were to happen.”

“Having these skilled staff members is a tremendous resource for Creative,” says Barb Cannon, Creative’s Biology Manager. “We are incredibly thankful to all our team members who help keep our sites and colleagues safe.”

In the spirit of continuous improvement, Creative hopes to achieve the Occupational Safety Standard of Excellence (OSSE) designation in Fall 2022.
