Logistics Manager

LOCATION: Tofino, British Columbia

Creative Salmon is Canada’s first certified organic farm salmon producer, operating in Tla-o-qui-aht traditional territory, Tofino B.C.

In this Tofino-based role, you will report to the Biology and Operations Director, and be responsible for managing the town/yard land-based operations including the wastewater treatment plant; silage; yard and warehouse; alarms and security; and trucking and transport (including vessels used for harvesting and supply, necessitating continual coordination with farm-based staff).

This role also oversees and manages feed inventory.

KEY DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES

The Logistics Manager supports operations and logistics through the following responsibilities:

Overall Management & Supervisory Responsibilities

  • Effectively leads and manages direct reports, providing ongoing performance management, orientation, training, and guidance to set them up for success and productivity
  • Coordinates with Human Resources as applicable to hire and onboard staff
  • Carries out and/or ensures effective onboarding and training of staff
  • Supports the Biology and Operations Director with relevant goals/strategies, standard operating procedures, and supports/monitors associated performance
  • Supports the Biology and Operations Director as needed with financial oversight of land-based operations and logistics, identifying and implementing cost-effective measures

Yard & Warehouse Management

  • Manages all yard/warehouse functions; ensures provision of materials, equipment, and supplies to sites and departments through ordering, receiving, warehousing, and distribution services
  • Manages yard and warehouse staff (scheduling, orientation, training, associated HR)
  • Coordinates warehouse, storage, silage, and yard activities and ensures clean-up and maintenance
  • Oversees and ensures safety and maintenance checks are conducted on all equipment
  • Handles and/or oversees ordering, receipt/pick-up, and delivery to sites
  • Develops and maintains associated records and tracking
  • Monitors yard activity (i.e. deliveries, contractors, public, etc.) and security cameras, and reports and/or responds to security alarms as needed
  • Ensures visiting contractors are properly oriented and adhere to safety requirements
  • Manages feed with respect to receipt, storage, inventory oversight, and delivery
  • Performs Warehouse and Yard Coordinator position on a fill-in basis as needed

Wastewater Treatment Plant Management

  • Ensures the safe and efficient operation of the wastewater (effluent) treatment facility following all company, regulatory, certification, and health and safety policies and procedures
  • Manages wastewater treatment plant staff (scheduling, orientation, training, associated HR)
  • Coordinates and oversees data collection/sampling, record keeping, and treatment
  • Ensures ongoing and as-needed maintenance, repairs, installations, and cleaning
  • Performs Wastewater Operator position on a fill-in basis as needed

Trucking & Transport Management  

  • Manages transportation and trucking services, monitoring shipment schedules, tracking, and resolving issues
  • Schedules and coordinates large vessels’ activities and crewing (i.e. Harvest King for supply and Tamanawas for harvest)
  • Coordinates, as needed, with the Maintenance department with respect to shifting and moving small vessels
  • Stays informed about industry regulations, licenses, and permits related to transportation
  • In coordination with the Health and Safety Manager, communicates with Transport Canada on compliance issues; reports any vessel incidents. Ensures follow-up tasks/requirements are completed
  • Coordinates contract barge as needed (when the supply vessel is out of service)

Staff Housing (Tofino and Ucluelet)

  • Coordinate and perform routine inspections (interior) ensuring appropriate notice to tenants
  • Establish a maintenance schedule for buildings and properties; perform basic tasks and/or assign with internal Maintenance Manager support and/or bring in contractors

Other Responsibilities

  • Coordinates regularly with the Health and Safety Manager and Occupational Health & Safety Committee
  • Coordinates with Lions Gate Fisheries, Tofino, on issues involving shared property and overlapping workflow
  • Collaborates with suppliers and vendors to ensure timely receipt of necessary materials and services; works with Biology and Operations Director to negotiate contracts
  • Responds to/addresses issues and emergencies when required
  • Supports the Biology and Operations Director and carries out any other duties as necessary to ensure the scope of the role is met

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

Education &/or Experience

  • Proven experience in logistics, supply chain management, warehouse/yard management
  • Familiarity with aquaculture operations
  • Demonstrated experience as a supervisor/manager of a team
  • OR Equivalent combination of knowledge, education, training, and experience

Competencies: Skills, Knowledge & Personal Characteristics  

  • Hands-on operational knowledge and ability to perform basic maintenance
  • Strong knowledge of transportation regulations, permits, and compliance requirements
  • Effective supervisory and team management skills; ability to effectively train, orient and performance manage a diverse crew
  • Effective communication and interpersonal skills
  • Self-directed with the ability to organize, establish, and manage priorities and workflow, problem-solve, and deliver results
  • Ticketed/licensed for, or willing to be trained to operate, small vessels, pick-up truck, forklift, crane, propane filling

WORK ENVIRONMENT/CONDITIONS

  • Requires residency in (or within 20 km of) the District of Tofino
  • Requires varying hours as needed and ability to be on call during evenings and/or weekends
  • Requires occasional boat travel to farm sites
  • Working in an outdoor environment as well as desk-based

COMPENSATION/BENEFITS

Salary Range

$75,000-$85,000/year (commensurate with experience)
